Swinton Lions launch ‘Proud to be Blue’ crusade

Swinton Lions are looking to up their fanbase with a new campaign to bring back former supporters since their demotion to Championship 1 status.
The Lions have stated without equivocation they’ll be promoted back into the Kingstone Press Championship at the end of this season.

And they’ve been true to their word with cup wins including a record-breaking 86-3 points victory over London Skolars.

Now the key is to bump up their home crowds to match the club’s aspirations.

John Duffy is at the centre of it all: the 35-year-old former Scotland coach signed a two-year contract extension in March and is the man credited with the Lions’ revival.

Insiders at the club have promised to give Duffy “the tools and the freedom to introduce the talent that he needs to meet the club’s goals”.

And despite Red Devils chairman Marwan Koukash lambasting Salford City Council over the Swinton stadium farrago, the club say negotiations are ongoing to bring them back to their home town for the first time since 1992.

All eyes are on the Lions as they look towards a Good Friday clash with North Wales Crusaders and a 7 April re-scheduled semi-final iPro League Cup clash with Newcastle Thunder.

Outstanding loose-forward Connor Dwyer is definitely out with a shoulder complaint, while Welsh star Rhodri Lloyd has been recalled by Wigan folowing his month on loan with the Lions.

But Darren Hawkyard is set for a game return with fitness plans progressing well.

A spokesperson for the club said: “Our success so far in both the iPro Sports League One Cup and the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup have increased spectator numbers, and it’s really good to see new supporters getting behind us.

“We’re also aware that significant numbers of former disaffected supporters are buying into the ambitions of the new management, and have returned to the fold.

“So if you’re still a ‘Blue’ Swinton fan at heart and proud of your 150 years of heritage, come and join our growing team of supporters!

“After all, the future is blue, not red!”
