4* Review: The Scarecrows’ Wedding – The Lowry, Salford Quays

The Scarecrow’s Wedding is a highly entertaining family show with a simple set, beautiful music and a wonderful story with a very happy ending which is destined to put a smile on anyone’s face.

Scamp Theatre have once again put together a big stage adaptation of one of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s bestselling books – proving to be a huge success.

Betty O’Barley and Harry O’Hay are the perfect couple. They’re two happy, charming and cheerful scarecrows who love having fun together but finally decide it’s time to get married.

Betty repeats throughout the show that its going to be “the best wedding ever, the best wedding yet, the wedding that no one will ever forget”. Her smile is contagious and you want everything to run smoothly for her.

Betty’s wish list includes a dress made of feathers, a necklace made of shells, lots of pink flowers, two rings and a few bells. They manage to fulfil all the requests except for one so Harry decides to venture off to make his future wife have everything she wants on her special day.

Harry sets off to find pink flowers for Betty and meets some interesting characters on his journey. My son absolutely loved the snail who was so funny eating his sandwich and asking for a sleep after he had eaten.

The farmer discovers Harry has disappeared and decides to replace him with a new scarecrow and imports Reginald Rake from France.

Reginald is set to impress Betty with his fast car, foreign accent but it’s not long before he messes up and Harry rushes back to save the day putting out the fire with the water in the bucket keeping his pink flowers alive.

The wedding goes ahead and Mr & Mrs Hay live happily ever after.

All in all a top family-oriented drama which plays well to families with children aged 3 and over.
