Travel advice for Christmas Lights switch on

People travelling around Manchester city centre over the weekend (Saturday 7 & Sunday 8 November) are advised to plan their journeys in advance due to a number of high profile events taking place.

The annual Christmas Lights switch-on in Albert Square will take place on Saturday from 7pm and is expected to bring thousands of people into the city centre, followed by the Remembrance Day Parade on Sunday.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is working closely with Manchester City Council to coordinate public transport in and out of the city centre over the weekend.

Road closures will be in effect from 5pm on Saturday and will include the following:
• Albert Square
• Mount Street
• Peter Street
• Princess Street

Full details of road closures are available on Manchester City Council’s website.

This will bring changes to the following bus services:
• 12, 25, 26, 32, 36, 37, 38, 41, 50, 197, X34, X41TD, X43, Metroshuttle 1 and Night Services 8 and 39

More detailed information on bus diversion routes is available on the TfGM website.

Some road closures will remain in place until 2pm on Sunday 8 November, and parking in designated areas will be suspended, due to the Remembrance Day Parade.

Motorists and passengers are advised to give themselves extra time to travel, with buses, trains and trams expected to be in high demand in the run up to and after the event.

Metrolink will continue to provide frequent services across all lines and staff will be in place at the busiest stops.

Roads in and around Albert Square will remain closed throughout the morning and improvement works on the Rochdale, Bury and city centre Metrolink lines mean some changes to tram services and replacement bus services will operate this weekend.

Information on all public transport services in Greater Manchester is available at www.tfgm.com or by calling Traveline on 0871 200 22 33 (calls cost 10p per minute plus any network charges).
