Latest: Car thief robs woman with broken bottle in Walkden before police chase arrest

A car thief held a broken bottle to a woman’s neck to steal her car before being brought down in a police chase just hours later.

At around 7.50am this morning, Tuesday 7 April, the woman was getting out of her grey Toyota RAV4 at a car park on Prescott Street in Walkden, near St Andrew’s Primary School.

As she turned around to lock the door she was approached by a man wielding a broken bottle, who grabbed her and held it to her neck until she gave up the car keys.

The offender drove off in the direction of Swinton.

The woman was extremely shaken but luckily suffered only superficial cuts to her neck.

She was assessed at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Salford Royal hospital for treatment.

Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Around around 11.30am, traffic officers picked up a sign of the RAV4 near Moorside Road in Swinton.

After a short chase through the streets involving at least three police vehicles, they deployed a Stinger spike strip to bring the stolen car to a halt.

The 33-year-old thief was arrested at the scene and is now in police custody for questioning.

Sgt Chris Kitson, from GMP’s Intercept Unit, said: “Thankfully, the woman only suffered minor cuts to her neck but clearly she is in shock after being threatened by a man brandishing a broken bottle.

“Our officers were called to help find the suspect, which lead to a pursuit through Salford.

“This was carried out by GMP officers from our Intercept Team who are trained to pursue vehicles safely.

“As a result, the stolen car was stopped safely by deflating a number of tyres and the suspected offender arrested.

“High-speed pursuits always carry an element of risk but we use specially-trained officers behind the wheel to minimise that risk, protect the public and pursue suspected offenders.

“I am pleased that in this instance we arrested the suspected offender and no members of the public were injured during the pursuit.”
