Top tips for travelling into the city for the Christmas markets

British Transport Police: We’re gearing up for the busiest time of the year with a festive policing plan to ensure passengers travel in safety this Christmas.

Our officers, working with station staff and train operators, will be increasing visibility at stations across the town to reassure the public and help visitors to the city enjoy the run up to Christmas.

With public transport recommended as the best way of travelling into the city to visit the Christmas markets we are reinforcing our message of ‘goodwill to all men’.

As trains become more packed with Christmas shoppers and revellers, tempers can fray. This, coupled with the traditional festive night out which can involve excessive alcohol consumption can result in anti social behaviour and sometimes violence.

Chief Inspector Andrea Graham is urging the public to extend the festive spirit to their fellow passengers, rail staff and officers by being patient and respectful during the Christmas hustle and bustle.

She said: “We all know what it’s like when you’re travelling into the city on a packed train, full of people loaded with shopping bags or in high spirits ready to socialise with friends. We want to pass on the message that rail staff are doing their best to ensure everyone gets where they want to be in time and they aren’t to blame for busy trains.

“Be respectful and just have a little bit of patience if your train is late or it’s cramped. We would also say to anyone who is travelling after having a bit to drink, to be mindful of their fellow passengers.

“Manchester’s Christmas markets are growing in popularity every year and we are expecting more pressure on the rail network. Our advice is to plan your journey to avoid peak times and to keep an eye on your belongings. If you’re in the city to celebrate, then keep an eye on your friends too. Let’s all enjoy a trouble-free Christmas and show a bit of goodwill to all.”
