Volunteers launch Christmas music event to help homeless in Salford

Musicians and poets will get top billing in a charity night next month at The Old Pint Pot pub on the Crescent to raise money for three deserving charitable organisations.

The event is the brainchild of local author and radio presenter Simon Williams, who readers may remember created the #5TinChallenge to organise food donations for homeless people and is up for a Spirit of Salford Award with local housing association Salix Homes.

On Friday 18 December from 7pm till late local musicians including Chris Flynn, The Ascension and Benefit State will perform alongside one of Salford’s hottest rising poetry stars Jimmy Twamley, with tickets on the door a mere £5.

Seeing the benefit of all this goodwill will be St Ann’s Hospice, Salford homeless organisation Coffee4Craig and ex-servicepeople’s support group Shelter for Services.

Simon told us: “I have organised this event because in this city we are all about caring for needy people and helping the less fortunate, which is why all the money raised on the night will go to local charitable organisations.

“This cash will be vital to help these organisations carry out charitable work in Salford.”

Sadly today SalfordOnline.com reported the news that an 82-year-old ex-serviceman died hours after being evicted from a city centre squat in Manchester.

Williams and his band of volunteers are hoping to raise enough money from the night to keep as many people as possible off the streets of Salford and Manchester this winter.

A raffle will be held with some great prizes including a signed Manchester United shirt, a Manchester City shirt, Salford Red Devils shirt
and even a Manchester United shirt that has been worn by a current player.

But probably the best item that has been donated for the raffle is a Roland SH-201 digital synthesiser played by electronic music legend Jean Michell Jarre, worth over £400.

If you can’t make it on the night and would like to make a donation, or add to the charity raffle, you can contact Simon on the Sounds of Salford
Facebook page and he will organise to collect it for you.
