Looking for descendants of the Salford Blitz

Just before Christmas, 75 years ago, German bombers undertook their fiercest air raid against Manchester and Salford, killing an estimated 684 people and injuring 2,364. In Salford, over 215 people were killed and 910 were injured.

The Friends of Salford Cemeteries Trust remember the victims annually, at two events on the Sunday before Christmas, by laying wreaths at the Blitz Memorial Garden at Agecroft Cemetery, Swinton and at a graveside at Peel Green Cemetery, Eccles.

(The Green family lost three children that night. The eldest Elizabeth, had her boyfriend staying overnight, who was also killed. He was 18 year old Able Seaman Clarence Hadfield who was home on leave).

This year’s events will mark the 75th anniversary of the 1940 Blitz, and the Friends are inviting descendants of the Blitz victims and other members of the public to join them in a brief, wreath-laying ceremony at
11 am at Agecroft Cemetery and at 12 noon at Peel Green Cemetery on Sunday 20th December.

The Friends would welcome contact from descendants who would like to attend, and also invite members of the public to join them. Contact pete.kilvert@ntlworld.com or 0161 748 3123 for further details.
