Police probe launched after Eccles passenger ‘dragged down road by bus’

Police are investigating after a man suffered leg injuries when he was trapped and dragged a short distance along the street by a bus in Eccles.

The 31-year-old was attempting to board the 67 First bus to Cadishead at a bus stop outside the Rainbow Rooms on Liverpool Road in Patricroft at around 7.55pm last night, Monday 23 November.

It appears the driver refused the man admittance and the man’s foot became tangled in the doors as the bus pulled away.

Both police and the bus company are now analysing CCTV to discover the exact circumstances.

The man suffered bleeding to his leg, ankle and foot injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Salford Royal hospital by ambulance.

His injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

Eyewitness Gareth Cumbo, 34, from Eccles, told SalfordOnline.com: “I was waiting for the bus outside the old Rainbow Rooms when I saw the man attempt to board the bus and for some reason the driver would not let him on board and closed the doors.

“The man became somehow trapped in the doors and as it drove off it dragged him along the ground and the back wheel of the bus ran over his leg.

“I went to his aid and phoned the police and ambulance who arrived shortly afterwards.

“I gave a full statement to what I had witnessed and to be honest I have no doubt that the bus ran over his leg, of course it’s entirely possible it was accidental but it did happen.”

Greater Manchester Police confirmed they were in contact with First and would study CCTV of the incident to discover what happened.

In a statement Adrian Worsfold of First Manchester said: “We’re investigating an incident involving a pedestrian and one of our 67 bus services on Monday evening.

“As part of our investigation we’ll be examining CCTV and will be fully supporting the police with their own inquiry.”
