Care home residents get 5-Star treatment at Walkden Sixth Form Centre

This week a group of twelve Residents from HC-One Care Homes were treated to a very special pamper day courtesy of the students at Salford City College’s Walkden Sixth Form Centre. The ladies’ first stop on their big day out at the College was a visit to the hair and beauty department, where they had their hair, make-up and nails done by the Level 3 Media Make-Up students.

“The students have really been looking forward to this visit, and it was so lovely to see the smiles on the faces of our students and their models,” commented Beverley Braisdell, Curriculum Leader for Media Make-Up. “The event has been a great way to build the students’ skills and confidence, particularly now that they have experience working with mature clients with differing skin types.”

Next stop was a trip to The Glass House student training restaurant, where each of the glamorous ladies revealed their new looks, to a round of the applause from the students and care home staff. To finish off their afternoon of pampering, the care home visitors were treated to a luxurious afternoon tea courtesy of the College’s talented Hospitality and Culinary Arts students.

The whole event was caught on camera by the Level 1 Creative Arts & Media students, who will be creating a short film to give to the Residents to help remember their day.

Saima Sultana, Curriculum Leader for Creative Industries, said: “I am so proud of the Media students, as it was their first filming opportunity and they acted professionally at all times. The collaborative project has really inspired them and helped to raise the standards for the students.”

“Today really has been a dream come true for our Residents- our lovely ladies have been made to feel so special and glamorous,” commented Karen Davies, Home Manager at Rose Court Care Centre in Bury. “What we wanted to achieve from today was to show how you can live positively with dementia, and the smiles all-round really do reflect that.”

She added: “Some of our Residents suffer severely with dementia, so communication can be a real issue, but I have been amazed at how well the students have engaged with them. We can’t thank everyone at the College enough- I think there were even a few tears as the make-overs were revealed!”

Media Make-Up student Emma Humphreys, 18, said: “Doing the make-overs for the Residents has been so lovely; we’ve all really enjoyed it. My grandma has Alzheimer’s and lives in a care home, so for me it has been a particularly touching experience.”

The photos taken of the glamorous Residents by the Creative Arts & Media students will be used to produce a 2016 calendar, which will be sold in the HC-One Care Homes Chorlton Place, Pendleton Court, Rose Court and Worsley Lodge. All monies raised will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Society. The event and the production of the calendars were made possibly by the kind sponsorship of Harvest Healthcare.
