Andrew Lloyd Webber donates £25k for new playwrights at The Lowry

Around 300 young playwrights will get the chance of support from theatre experts at The Lowry after a foundation run by legendary producer Andrew Lloyd Webber donated £25,000.

The funding will enable The Lowry to offer workshops, mentoring and rehearsal space to early-career artists, it said today.

Award-winning comedian Sophie Willan from Salford and Manchester family theatre company Colour the Clouds are among nine projects who will now get backing through the Developed With The Lowry and the Associate Artist Scheme.

Steve Cowton, head of theatre operations, says: “We are absolutely delighted by this award, which is a ringing endorsement of our work over the last six years.

“Alongside our ongoing support from Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and Arts Council England, this funding means we will be able to offer a great range of opportunities to aspiring and ambitious theatre makers and make sure Salford is seen nationally as one of the best places to seek out the next generation of theatre talent.”
