M60 to close at Eccles, Worsley and Swinton overnight

Drivers are being warned that parts of the M60 at Eccles, Worsley and Swinton are to close overnight for six days in April.

Highways England is undertaking work to demolish 16 overhead metal gantries to install electronic signs as part of the 17-mile smart motorway project between Sale and Rochdale.

The controversial plan will see narrow lanes, variable speed limits and more than 200 electronic overhead signs come into use to control traffic flow on what is one of the busiest stretches of motorway in the country.

The first closure starts at 10pm on Saturday 18 April anticlockwise between Junction 12 at the M602/M62 interchange and Junction 11 at Eccles.

This section will be re-opened at 6am the next morning.

The eastbound link road from the M62 onto both sides of the M60 will also be closed between 10pm and 6am between Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 April, along with the westbound link road from the M602 onto the anticlockwise side of the M60.

On Monday 20 April the anticlockwise M60 between Junction 16 at Pendlebury and Junction 15 at the Swinton/M61 interchange will close between 10pm and 6am.

Then on Tuesday 21 April the clockwise M60 will be shut between 10pm and 6am between Junction 13 at Worsley and Junction 15 at the Swinton/M61 interchange, along with the eastbound link road from the M62 onto the clockwise side of the M60 at Junction 12.

On Wednesday 22 April, the clockwise side of the M60 will be closed overnight between Junction 10 at Trafford Park and Junction 12 at the interchange with the M62 and M602.

This will be followed by the closure of the link roads from the eastbound M62 onto both sides of the M60 on Thursday 23 April.

The final closure is set for 10pm to 6am on Saturday 25 April when the clockwise M60 will shut between Junction 12 at the M62/M602 interchange and Junction 13 at Worsley.

The eastbound link roads from the M62 onto both sides of the M60 will also be closed at Junction 12, along with the westbound link road from the M602 onto the clockwise side of the M60.

Work on the smart motorway started in July 2014 and at current estimates is expected to be completed by autumn 2017.

Highways England say more overnight closures are needed in May and June to complete the gantry demolitions, with the dates still to be announced.
