Man arrested for immigration offences at Victoria Park in Swinton

A man has been arrested for immigration offences after being spotted taking photographs of children in a Swinton park.

Police were called to Victoria Park at around 12.55pm today, Tuesday 14 April, to reports of a man acting suspiciously and taking images of 6 and 7-year-old girls.

It’s understood the suspect, who is in his late 20s, is originally from Bangladesh but is currently living in Eccles.

A mum who was concerned about the man’s behaviour approached a passerby, who walked over to the man to ask him what he was doing.

When the passerby approached the suspect, he ran off, but he was swiftly caught and held until police arrived.

The passerby, who has asked not to be named, told SalfordOnline.com: “A mum came up to me on Victoria Park and told me about a man taking pictures of kids.

“I went over asked him what he was doing and he sprinted off but I caught him. There were a lot of children around at the time so I did not want to make a scene but held on to him until police arrived.”

On arrival police questioned the man about the photography incident but found no offence had been committed.

It is not illegal to take pictures of the public in public places.

However, on further investigation the man was arrested on suspicion of immigration offences.

He is now being dealt with by Home Office immigration officials.
