Salford City College rated ‘Good’ in Ofsted inspection

Salford City College are celebrating after being awarded a ‘Good’ rating in their latest Ofsted report.

Inspectors found key strengths at the college included students making “particularly good progress in developing their personal skills and confidence.”

It means the college maintains its 2010 ‘Good’ rating.

“Teaching, learning and assessment are good,” said Ofsted.

“Learners have a very positive attitude towards their studies, and work hard to achieve their target grades.”

“You, your senior leaders and governors have a clear and ambitious strategy for the college to be fully responsive to local needs and priorities, and to ensure the college’s future sustainability.”

Ofsted added that other key strengths include safeguarding, and the progress monitoring carried out by the teaching staff through the provision of ‘helpful feedback’.

The college came under close scrutiny back in October after reports that 57 jobs would be cut.

It published a Business Transformation Plan in response to a staggering £3 million of Further Education cuts laid down by central government.

At the time, the college expected a deficit of £700,000 in 2015/16, and over £1 million every further year until 2020.

Among the proposals were losing all student counselling, selling off land and buildings at Walkden to raise capital, and significant drop in teaching hours with a major push to online learning.

In 2015 Salford City College students achieved an A-Level pass rate of 99%.

John Spindler, CEO & Principal at Salford City College, said: “We are immensely proud that the Ofsted inspection report gives the College the recognition it deserves for the fantastic provision it offers and the success it achieves through the dedication of its learners and staff.

“It is also great to know that we had an overwhelmingly positive response to the Ofsted learner survey, with 97% of learners agreeing that their course meets their needs.

“We are extremely proud to be the top performing General Further Education College in Greater Manchester for 16-18 year olds, and our Ofsted rating further confirms this excellence in delivering first class teaching and learning.”
