20-year-old charged with GBH after man and woman left fighting for life in Weaste


A man has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm after a man and woman were seriously injured in a baseball bat attack in Weaste, Salford.

Jake Hines, 20, of West Drive, Salford, has been charged with three section 18 assaults and possession of an offensive weapon.

He was due to appear at Manchester City Magistrates Court today, Tuesday 19 January 2016.

Police said a large crowd of people had witnessed the brutal assault.

The fight happened in the street on Barff Road in the early hours of Monday 18 January.

A 36-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman suffered serious head injuries. Their condition was later downgraded from ‘critical’ to ‘stable’ but both victims are still recovering in hospital.

Their two young children are believed to have been indoors when the attack happened.

A 30-year-old woman also suffered a broken hand in the attack.

On Monday morning officers cordoned off roads from the top of New Cross Street to an alleyway halfway down Barff Road.

Detective Inspector Ben Hart from GMP’s Salford division said: “This was a very violent attack that took place in the early hours of this morning and has left two people critically injured in hospital.”
