Bomb squad detonate ‘potentially toxic chemicals’ found at Boothstown house

Police, fire crews and army bomb disposal teams were sent to Boothstown this morning to help remove suspected toxic chemicals from a house.

The homeowner, who lives on Windlehurst Drive in Boothstown, called emergency services on Wednesday afternoon after discovering the substances in his garage.

Police called the 521 Explosive Ordnance Device Squadron, part of the Royal Logisitics Corps at Dale Barracks in Chester, to safely remove the containers of degraded, volativle chemicals.

At 10.10am the substances were escorted from the scene to a patch of land off Leigh Road in Boothstown where officers carried out a controlled explosion.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “Leigh Road was briefly closed at 10.48am. At 10.54am the bomb squad detonated the containers. There is no ongoing threat to human health and the road has now reopened.”

It appears the chemicals had been stored in the garage of the house for a substantial period of time but they had degraded and there was some potential for them to become harmful.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire said the authority had sent an officer to investigate at 4.30pm on Wednesday 20 January.

He in turn called a specialist Hazardous Materials officer to assess the situation.

Leaving as night fell, one fire crew from Irlam returned this morning, along with police, an ambulance and the army bomb disposal unit.

No charges were brought against the homeowner.
