Opera comes to Salford Arts Theatre

A double bill of Opera will be performed at Salford Arts Theatre, Kemsing Walk, Salford on Friday, 5 February when the Radius company present an evening of dark entertainment.

A double bill of dark and mesmerizing one-act operas by Tim Benjamin with words by Anton Chekhov and Anthony Peter, features Taylor Wilson (mezzo-soprano) in Silent Jack and James Fisher (bass) in R.I.P. and is produced by Radius, creators of critically acclaimed operas Emily and Madame X.

R.I.P: Set in Moscow, 2020, an old man wakes amid the filth and detritus of early 21st century consumerism. What causes the fever that plagues his mind? His last day is upon him. Before the final judgement we hear his tale, told through the questions and exclamations of his past, seared into his mind as his life unwinds.

Silent Jack: Three centuries earlier, a young woman stumbles into a secret cellar, surrounded by the faded remants of past glory decaying all around. Who is she? Why does she collapse, exhausted, craving sleep? Her final moments have arrived. We hear her tale, of riches and love won and lost, and we learn the terrible truth of the price of her struggle to survive.

Life Stories premiered at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, on 1st July 2015, before embarking on a tour of the north-west, taking in Preston, Halifax, and Todmorden, followed by an acclaimed run of performances at London’s prestigious festival of contemporary opera, Tête-à-Tête: The Opera Festival. The festival’s Artistic Director, Bill Bankes-Jones, said:
“I’m delighted to be welcoming Radius to our festival to present their double bill this year. I’m always particularly keen to welcome companies from outside London to premiere their work here, and look forward to it very much.”

The show starts at 7.30pm, tickets are priced at £5, £8, £10.

Tickets are available from Salford Arts Theatre on 0161 925 0111.
