Salford police have issued a scam alert after reports that elderly people in the area have received phone calls from a person pretending to be from a local GP surgery, asking for an appointment to talk about mobility.

“During the appointment, the older person is persuaded to buy mobility aids which are either unnecessary or inappropriate and always expensive.

“If you receive a call like this, please check with your GP surgery first before agreeing to a visit.”

Anyone who receives a call like this, or is told about it by an elderly relative, should contact Greater Manchester Police on 101.

In October last year one scam victim from Broughton told how she had ended up on a national ‘victim’s register’ and had been plagued by phone calls from fake lottery companies.

The 65-year-old has learned to ignore the constant phone calls she receives, and says she still gets around 10 scam letters through the post every day.

Salford Trading Standards warn people not to give work to doorstep traders or respond to prize mail letters.
