Swinton dumped out of Challenge Cup by bristling Batley

Swinton’s march in the Challenge Cup came to a halt when they went down 46-14 to a rampant Batley Bulldogs at Mount Pleasant on Sunday.
The Lions’ form has been outstanding in 2015 and it looked like continuing when Jimmy Rowland sent a kick over the try line and Chris Rothwell won the race to score in the left corner, Chris Atkin could not add the conversion.

Sean Hesketh then went close and was held up for the home side and from the play the ball it was swung right and Wayne Reittie went over in the corner but Cain Southernwood could not add the conversion.

Five minutes later they were in again when a good passing movement ended with Brad Day scoring by the posts and Southernwood converted.

Bulldogs strength was starting to show and midway through the half and added another try when Alistair Leek made a break and Southernwood finished it off under the posts and then added the conversion too.

Another good passing movement saw Shaun Ainscough go in at the left corner but the conversion for this was missed.

The Lions hit back with their second try on the half hour when Stuart Litter scored in the right corner but again Atkin could not add the conversion and in the build up to the try the Lions lost Rowland with a dislocated shoulder.

Bulldogs went further ahead within two minutes of the restart when Jacob Morgan latched onto a Shaun Squires kick to go over by the posts and Southernwood converted.

Rothwell then made a good break for the Lions and fed the ball to Hurst who was tackled just short of the line and then Andy Ackers was held up on fifty minutes.

The next points came when Ainscough intercepted a Lions pass to race away and score under the posts and Southernwood converted, Tom Thackray added yet another try for the home side just before Hawkyard returned but the conversion was missed.

Shaun Robinson added the Lions third try on sixty-eight minutes when he made a break up the right wing and Atkin added the touchline conversion and he could have had another a few minutes later when Littler broke up the right but the pass to his winger went to ground.

Thackray scored his second try eight minutes from the end when he strode down the slope leaving defenders in his wake to score to the right of the posts but Southernwood missed the kick and with a couple of minutes left Leek scored under the posts and the conversion was added to put the Bulldogs in the hat.
