Salford City College takes over Walkden High School for ‘Selling Futures’ Day

Last week staff and students from all curriculum areas at Salford City College took over Walkden High School for a day, in a special event that aimed at to get youngsters thinking about their futures.

With fun and interactive activities, including a virtual reality experience from the Games Design department, and gruesome prosthetic wounds from the Media Make-up department, the high school pupils got an insight into the huge variety of exciting courses on offer at Salford City College.

First year IT Software student Leah Dean, 17, from Salford City College’s Pendleton Sixth Form Centre was on-hand to show pupils the fantastic courses offered by the College’s ICT department.

Leah said: “It was great to meet potential new students. I’m a strong advocate for getting more girls into IT, and so it was great to speak to some of the female pupils who had a genuine interest in the subject.”

Former Walkden High School pupil Chloe Thomson, 18, now works as an Admissions Apprentice at Salford City College. She said: “It was great to go back to my old school and offer advice to pupils about what they can go on to do and achieve once they finish their studies in Year 11.”

Year 11 Walkden High School pupil Ella Cosgrove is planning to study Media at Salford City College’s FutureSkills in September.

She said: “I can’t wait to go to college, and it will be great to be studying Media right in the heart of MediaCityUK. Even though I already know what I want to study at college, the event today has been a good way to see what other courses are on offer at Salford City College.”

Josh Mangas, Associate Assistant Headteacher at Walkden High School, said: “Today was an overwhelming success, and the buzz that the event has generated throughout school is phenomenal. The children have been blown away by the excitement of what they can do at Salford City College. It is easily one of the best things we’ve ever done in school, without a doubt.”
