Watch: British Transport Police search Eccles in major investigation

Officers from British Transport Police have been carrying out a major investigation near Eccles station today.

At around 1pm on Monday 20 April, teams backed by Tactical Aid Units from Greater Manchester Police arrived at Eccles Train station in preparation for a fingertip search along the railway line at Vicarage Grove.

The officers, some dressed in specialist protective clothing, were seen searching around roadside railings and an embankment near John Dalton car park, with some wearing abseiling gear and safety harnesses.

The cause of the search is still unknown but believed to be related to a prior investigation in Salford.

After a short period of time, more officers arrived and a similar search was being undertaken in an area outside Orbit House.

All officers were still on the scene two hours later.

British Transport Police could not confirm the nature of the investigation.
