Special Olympics dream on for Hannah as Millie-Mae’s charity raises £1.5k

A teenage swimmer with Down’s Syndrome is one step closer to the European Special Olympics thanks to fundraising by an eight-year-old from Little Hulton.

Hannah Payton, 18, needs around £3,000 to take her and her family to Lyon in June to compete in the world’s top athletics championship for people with learning disabilities.

The Swinton teenager, who swims for Cheshire Penguins, has been making rapid progress in the pool in recent years and has the prestigious accolade of being selected for Team GB for the summer games in France.

But without the funding, her Olympic dream could be over before it begins.

So in stepped Little Hulton tot Millie-Mae Burgess-Greenwood, whose charity Millie Mae’s Embarkment helps raise funds for local good causes.

With 19 volunteers carrying out a simple sponsored bag pack at ASDA Swinton on Saturday 18 April, the charity pulled in over £1,200, to which they’ll add £328 earned with a similar event at ASDA Atherton last month.

Millie-Mae herself lives with cerebral palsy and has long-term health issues due to childhood stroke.

Hannah’s mum Jutta said: “I just want to thank the people of Swinton and Salford for their generosity.

“Hannah is absolutely buzzing and can’t wait to continue training to compete in France.”
