Salford City College once again tops DofE league tables for A-Levels

The latest performance tables issued by the Department of Education (DofE) have shown that Salford City College remains the number one General Further Education (GFE) college in Greater Manchester for its A-Level provision.

The results are based on the 2014-15 academic year, in which 526 students sat A-Levels at the College’s Pendleton and Eccles Sixth Form Centres. This figure also makes Salford City College the largest GFE provider of A-Levels in Greater Manchester.

The average grade achieved across the 526 students who sat their A-Level exams in 2014-15 was a C, which is higher than any other GFE College in the county. The results also place the College in close competition with sixth form providers in the area, with the highest performing sixth form in Greater Manchester boasting an average grade of C+.

In a live broadcast for BBC Breakfast on results day last August, Salford City College’s CEO & Principal John Spindler revealed that A-Level students had achieved an outstanding 99% pass rate.

The DofE league tables reveal that 89% of all A-Level students at the College gained at least three A-E grades. This is higher than any other GFE college in Greater Manchester offering A-Levels, and just 1% lower than the top performing sixth form provider.

The average point score for students studying vocational qualifications was also impressive, placing the College second highest in Greater Manchester out of a total of ten GFE colleges.

A recent Ofsted report, published in December 2015, congratulated the College on its ‘high-quality teaching, learning assessment’. The inspection found the College to be ‘Good’ and noted that: “Teachers use a wide range of interesting and relevant activities that motivate learners and enable them to improve their skills and knowledge quickly.”

Salford City College’s CEO & Principal, John Spindler, said: “We are extremely proud to once again be top of the league tables for our A-Level provision. It is great that our students can say that their results match those of some of the best sixth form providers in the region. This shows the fantastic contribution that FE colleges make to their local community.”

Salford City College recently announced plans for the development of a dedicated A-Level centre, based at Pendleton Sixth Form Centre, which will feature state-of-the-art facilities including brand new e-learning hubs.
