Eccles and District History Society celebrates sixty years

Hard to believe but it was sixty years ago this week that the Eccles and District History Society was formed at Eccles Library with the then Mayor of Eccles, Alderman J. McCann the first club President.

At the inaugral meeting it was decided that not only Eccles would be included in forthcoming talks but also the areas of the former Parish of Eccles including Boothstown, Cadishead, Irlam, Pendlebury, Pendleton, Swinton and Worsley.

Over the years the Society has met at several venues including Eccles library, Monks Hall Museum and Alexandra House on Liverpool Road, Peel Green.

Since then, the Society has promoted local history through its regular meetings and lectures, through its publications, and also through the Frank Mullineux Local History Award.

In February 2006 the Society celebrated its Golden Jubilee with over sixty members and guests, including His Worship the Mayor of Salford, gathered at the Bridgewater Room, Eccles Parish Church for a buffet, speeches and an evening of Lancashire folk music.

Tonights talk will be: 60 years of Eccles and its history society- given by Chris Carson.

The talk begins at 7.30pm and everbody is welcome to attend with an admission fee of £3.
