Police probe ‘suspicious’ car explosion in Ordsall

Police cordoned off a street in Ordsall after reports of a loud explosion.

Officers were called to Cloughfield Avenue, off Robert Hall Street, at around 11.30pm on Wednesday evening.

The sound of the blast, followed by puffs of white smoke, was widely reported across the Ordsall estate, Salford Quays and heard across Pendleton and Manchester city centre.

Reports from the scene suggest a Fiat Punto was damaged.

No-one was injured but witnesses at the scene suggest that police are treating the incident as suspicious.

One local resident who wished to remain anonymous told SalfordOnline.com: “I live round the corner from Cloughfield Avenue.

“There’s a Fiat Punto blown up and to be honest no signs of your typical car fire, no plumes of black smoke et cetera.

“Once it happened just a big cloud of white smoke and the noise, it was very, very loud.”

SalfordOnline.com has, as of 1am on Thursday, been unable to confirm any further details with Greater Manchester Police.

Update: A statement is expected from the force by 3am on Thursday morning.

It’s not yet known what caused the explosion.

But it prompted a flurry of tweets from Twitter users commenting on having heard the bang from miles away.
