Capital gains for Broncos with Swinton Lions mauling

London Broncos swept aside Swinton Lions in the capital by 38 points to 18.

Swinton put in an impressive performance for three-quarters of the match but ran out of steam when it mattered most.

The Lions started well and had a couple of chances before forcing a goal-line drop out.

Broncos made an error by kicking the ball directly into touch but from the penalty 10 metres in front of the posts the Lions opted to run the ball and the home defence held out.

Shortly after Rhodri Lloyd was sent to the sin bin for knocking the ball out of a Broncos player’s hand when a penalty was awarded.

Broncos were now looking strong and a couple of times the Lions defence held them short before Alex Walker finally slipped a tackle to score on the right. Wes Naiqama added the conversion.

The lead didn’t last long and Anthony Nicholson and Carl Forster combined to send Ben White over for the try under the posts and Chris Atkin slotted the simple conversion.

The Lions took the lead on 33 minutes when Rob Lever crashed over by the posts from penalty pressure and again Atkin converted.

Walker then added his second try for Broncos five minutes from the break and again Naiqama converted, but in the final seconds of the half White sent Connor Dwyer over for the Lions’ third try on the left. With the last kick of the half Atkin converted and the large travelling contingent cheering their side off the pitch.

Broncos coach Andrew Henderson obviously had a strong team-talk at half time because his side scored twice in the opening 12 minutes of the half with Matt Garside and Jack Bussey both going over the line and Naiqama added both conversions to put his side ahead.

The Lions had a great chance to level the score on the hour when Atkin broke the Broncos defence before handing on to Matty Beherrall who drew the defence and gave it to Dwyer on the left with Greg Scott in the clear, but he could not take the hurried pass and the chance went.

The Lions then lost playmaker Beherrall to an ankle injury. Swinton insiders tell us he should be fit enough for the Bradford Bulls game.

Naiqama missed a simple penalty attempt before Alex Foster went over for and unconverted try on the left and Mike Morrison was placed on report for an incident during the try build-up.

The home side then gave the scoreline a polish when they added two tries in the last three minutes with Iliess Macani and Joe Keyes going over and Naiqama converting the second.
