Salford Dadz to expand to Winton after success of Little Hulton pilot

A pioneering network set up in Little Hulton to help disadvantaged fathers is flourishing with more members than ever joining their ranks.

The Salford Dadz project was set up in 2013 as a one-year pilot with Salford CCG funding and has quickly become a source of local pride.

It’s now due to set up a new group in Winton.

London-based LankellyChase Foundation is also considering whether to spin out the scheme nationwide.

For the past two years Salford Dadz has been run by social enterprise Unlimited Potential.

It offers fun bonding activities and acts as a safe space for dads to come and discuss parenting issues.

Anthony Wright says his daughter has benefitted from his joining the group: he admits turning to drugs and alcohol in the past to escape feeling low, but says Salford Dadz have helped turn his life around.

“Not seeing my daughter made me feel down.

“What had gone on between me and my ex meant that I felt on my own and that I was the only one going through this problem, so drugs and alcohol blocked these feelings out.

“Salford Dadz helped me tackle this feeling of isolation.

“The group helped me to not only come out of myself but also helped with the fact that I can now speak and be able to give my experiences to others on how to cope.”

Salford Dadz won the Heart of Salford Award this year for the best Small Community Group.

Little Hulton and proud: Winning groups get £18k funding from criminal cash

Heather Henry, project manager at Unlimited Potential said: “As a health professional, I was taught to care for and look after people.

“The work with Salford Dadz has taught me that every father that I have met has gifts and strengths and is an expert in his own community.

Dr Mhairi Yates, a GP in Salford and clinical lead for innovation and research at Salford CCG said: “The work done by the Salford Dadz is incredible, and I am very proud that we were able to provide the funding in their early days, which has enabled them to flourish today.

“I have every confidence that the group is going to continue to go from strength to strength. I would encourage any fathers out there who are feeling the pressure and need that support to get in touch with them.”
