Travellers occupy Salford University Castle Irwell

Travellers have set up camp at the former Salford University Castle Irwell student halls, much to the consternation of local residents.

Around 15 wagons, vans and caravans arrived at the Cromwell Road car park at 1pm on Saturday 12 March.

More caravans turned up this morning, Monday 14 March.

Landowners Salford University said they were aware of the situation and would work to remove anyone who was trespassing illegally.

Until around three weeks ago the university still had a security guard posted at the gates, which were locked until the travellers arrived on Saturday.

Castle Irwell closed as student accommodation in June 2015.

The land, and the playing fields adjoining the former halls are still owned by Salford University.

A spokesman for Salford Univeristy told SalfordOnline.com: “We are aware of reports from the local community that travellers have set up on Castle Irwell.

“We are dealing with this internally and will be working to see anyone removed who is illegally trespassing on our land.”
