First win for Swinton Lions kicks off season proper

The Lions got their first Championship victory under their belts with a 28-18 win against close neighbours Oldham.

The visitors made 12 changes to the side that lost at home on Easter Friday to Halifax but the Lions took a large lead early in the second half.

The kick off was a bit of a disaster when Ben White knocked on in the very first tackle of the match.

But Swinton – revelling in recent plans unveiled for a new home stadium – fought back to take the lead in the fifth minute.

Rhodri Lloyd crossed on the left and Chris Atkin added a good conversion.

Atkin put the Lions further ahead on 17 minutes when he slipped a couple of tackles to score by the posts and add the conversion.

Eight minutes later Connor Dwyer burst through to go over on the left and again Atkin made no mistake with the kick and the Lions were flying.

Oldham pressure forced a goal line drop-out but nothing came of it and it was the Lions again who went even further ahead nine minutes from the break when Corbyn Kilday scored on the right.

A late tackle on Atkin in the opening minutes of the second half saw referee Sam Ansell award a penalty and from the pressure Matty Beharrell sent out a nice pass to Dwyer who raced away to the line for his second try.

It looked like Jon Ford was going to score for Oldham on 55 minutes but a great tackle from Kieran Hyde knocked him into touch.

They did then add two tries in a four minute period when Danny Grimshaw and Adam Files crossed and Lewis Palfrey converted both before Ford scored Oldham’s third try in the final minute of the match, but it was too little too late.

A delighted John Duffy commented after the match that the result had been coming and he was so pleased for the team’s efforts and once again thanked the fans for their support.
