Pure Gym set to open 8,000sq ft branch at West One Eccles

Budget fitness giant Pure Gym is planning to open a new branch at Eccles’ West One Retail Park, SalfordOnline.com can reveal.

The Leeds-based company is set to move in to a 8,630sq ft unit, next door to Home Bargains’ upcoming store.

Pure Gym is now Britain’s largest gym chain in terms of membership.

It claims to have over 450,000 people on its books nationwide.

It provides no-frills gyms without swimming pools, spas or squash courts and members pay online with no annual contracts.

West One looked to be on its last legs in 2013 when Tesco pulled out of a deal with then-owners PBN Holdings to bring a £30m supermarket to the out-of-town retail park.

But big chain stores taking cheap space and negotiations with Salford City Council to change planning uses have seen The Range and Smyth’s Toy Stores open up in the last 18 months.

Discount homeware brand Home Bargains is also due to open the doors soon on a 22,000sq ft space.

Pure Gym recently opened an outlet at Salford precinct, and its site at Exchange Quay tram stop off Ordsall Lane was its sixth in Greater Manchester.

It already has centres in Manchester city centre, on Bury New Road, and Spinningfields, but has never extended this far west into Salford before.

Pure Gym was founded in 2008 by entrepreneur Peter Roberts.

It took over rival LA Fitness in May last year and now operates over 100 branches across the country, with plans to expand to over 250 outlets in the next four years.
