SalfordOnline.com Rating 4 out of 5

Gary Delaney – husband of Sarah Millican – is consistently rated as a comedian’s comedian.

He’s made a living writing superb original jokes for other comics but really deserves a much higher profile for the quality of his set.

The tone for the night is set when Delaney comes out before his support act at this Lowry show and tells a few gags to see “what he can get away with”.

If you have done your research you should not be shocked to hear jokes about Jimmy Savile or Rolf Harris, however not all of the material is of such a sensitive nature.

Delaney believes that so called comedy nights don’t contain enough actual jokes, and in ‘Purist’, his debut solo show, he tries to single-handedly to redress the balance

Don’t expect: narrative, themes, whimsy or a voyage of self-discovery.

There are a large number of gags it would be improper to repeat on a family website but the hour-long show whips by with some very clever and original material.

Some of the printable jokes include: “I like to annoy my Israeli flatmate by giving him any post that’s just addressed To The Occupier.”

“My cousin always introduces himself as “Stephen with a ph” and that’s ‘cos he’s slightly acidic.”

One joke which particularly appealed to me is: “A friend of mine keeps going on and on about how good his orthopaedic shoe is. But I think he’s built it up too much.”

Towards the end of the set Delaney riffs on how he has altered or amended a large number of Wikipedia entries with improper facts or comments; this is both visual and very funny. The idea behind him doing this is to see how long it is before the comments are removed.

The content of the show is definitely suited to an adult audience but for anyone who is not easily shocked it is however well worth going to see.

One wonders who will win in the battle of the belly-laughs when his wife comes to The Lowry for her own tour in March?
