Fire crews, police and ambulances were called to the M62 westbound, heading towards Manchester, between junctions 11 for Birchwood and 12 for Eccles.
The crash saw two inside lanes closed while police dealt with debris in the road.
The front end of a dark green Jeep Cherokee was damaged with glass and plastic covering the carriageway, while the front and rear end of a black Chevrolet were completely smashed.
A third car and a van were also reportedly involved.
Lanes two and three remain closed westbound.
There are still severe delays on the M62 in both directions but all lanes are open on the eastbound carriageway.
