G-Festival ready to hit its fifth anniversary in Worsley this weekend

G-Festival – the annual music and family fun festival organised by a Manchester-based children’s charity, is preparing for the biggest event yet as it hits its fifth year.

The popular festival attracts thousands of visitors and is being held this May bank holiday Sunday, 1 May 2016 in Worsley.

It is run by Georgia’s Children of the World – a charity set up by Steve Murray in memory of his 19 year old daughter.

Over the past five years, the charity has raised almost £100,000 and helped children locally and overseas. Last year more than 3000 people attended G-Festival, with a special guest appearance from Happy Mondays’ Shaun Ryder.

Charity founder Steve, who was frontman of 70s Manchester punk band – Fast Cars, first had the inspiration for the fundraising event following the tragic loss of daughter Georgia after a heart operation in November 2010. He said: “G-Festival gets bigger and more exciting every year. We have amazing support from individuals and businesses across the region and further afield too – and are stepping things up to another level this year.”

There will be a huge line-up of local talent performing, with a special performance of ‘Take me home’ by 16 year old Jennifer Rice from Worsley – a song written by Steve and due to be released for download on the day.

Steve added: “I wrote the song while travelling with the charity and was looking for the right singer. Jennifer is an absolutely amazing young talent. When she performed at the festival last year it was an ‘X-factor’ moment – she caught everyone’s attention and I knew she’d be the perfect person to sing the song.”

It has been a busy 12 months for the charity; opening its first purpose built school in Cambodia, starting an initiative in Romania and launching a new Salford-based project. ‘Georgia’s House 5’ is an expansion of The Life Centre on Langworthy Road – a community hub in the heart of Salford that has been able to support more local children and their families in partnership with Georgia’s Children.

G-Festival 5 will take place at Ellesmere Sports Club in Worsley on Sunday 1 May from 12 noon until late. As well as live music throughout the day, there will be fairground rides and plenty of family fun. BBC’s Mike Sweeney will be showing his support, plus sets by The Smiths Ltd and the Kar-Pets tributes.
