Salford Cubs go wild as flying stars to land at Middlewood camp

Cub Scouts across Salford are busy gearing up to celebrate 100 years of adventure this weekend with their wildest birthday ever.

These eight to 10-year-olds gather together to go on trips, days out, and all manner of outdoors activities.

Thousands of adventure camps are taking place all over the country this weekend to celebrate 100 years of the Cub Scouts.

Flying in by helicopter to meet the eager Cubs will be BAFTA-winning adventurer and TV presenter Steve Backshall.

He’s due to touch down at Middlewood Scout Camp in Worsley on Saturday 30 April where he’ll join in fun activities with hundreds of local scouts.

He’ll be joined by rowing Olympic gold medalists Helen Glover and Heather Stanning, and former Scottish international rugby union star-turned-model Thom Evans.

Salford Cubs are being promised a great range of stuff to do, including climbing, axe throwing and canoeing, all under the supervision of practiced volunteers.

The cubs are the fastest-growing section of the Scouts in Salford, with 118 children joining across Salford and west Manchester in the last year.

They’ve seen a huge increase in the number of girls interested in getting involved too: 35 girls have signed up to local clubs in the past 12 months alone.

Steve’s mission as Cubs100 ambassador is to get more people involved with the movement and thank all the volunteer leaders who give up so much time for the children.

Steve said: “Like me, Cub Scouts love adventure and the outdoors: they’re learning new skills, trying new things and having the best possible start in life.

“If you were a Cub, why not come back and give us a little of your time as a volunteer? You’ll have incredible fun and help inspire a new generation.

“If you’re aged 8-10½ come join the adventure. Happy Birthday Cubs!”

Cub Scouts have also been getting involved in the ‘A Million Hands’ Campaign.

This initiative is enlisting half a million Scouts to volunteer for some of the UK’s biggest charities and to learn more about the causes they support.

The issues Scouts are taking action on includes, improving the lives of those affected by dementia, improving the lives of those disabled by society, improving the mental wellbeing and resilience of families and ensuring everyone everywhere has access to clean water and sanitation.
