Salford swims for Dementia

Great Britain Swimming Team member City of Salford’s Lewis Clough will be joining swimmers raising awareness of Dementia next Saturday May 21 at Worsley Leisure Centre.

“We are all so excited that Lewis is giving up his time to join us in this fantastic event,” said Naomi Lewis, Outreach Officer and Dementia Lead of Salford Community Leisure. “It’s lovely when someone as busy as Lewis will give up his precious time to help others. We are all swimming a mile – but I guess he’ll be just a bit quicker than the rest of us!”

Salford Community Leisure, the organisation committed to enhancing the physical and cultural wellbeing of the Salford community, is raising awareness of the 2,500 people living with dementia in the city through a special swimathon and participatory event as part of Dementia Awareness Week (15th – 21st May 2016).

Throughout the week people using Salford Community Leisure pools will swim 2,500 lengths – one for each person living with the condition in Salford. The initiative will culminate in an event – attended by Lewis – at Worsley Leisure Centre on Saturday 21st May, 10am – 12pm, where people living with dementia, their carers and families are invited to come together to swim a mile collectively.

Anyone can get involved in this exciting event, simply by attending one of the Salford Community Leisure pools and collecting a form at reception to record number of lengths swam.

Alternatively, the leaflet can also be downloaded here

During Dementia Awareness Week people taking part will be encouraged to sign-up to become a Dementia Friend, the Alzheimer’s Society’s drive to promote understanding of dementia.

The initiative is part of Salford Community Leisure’s Dementia Friendly commitment – a programme that ensures the organisation’s staff, venues and services meet the needs of those with dementia.
