Flats plan for former Polish Hell club in Eccles

Plans have been submitted to Salford City Council to convert a former club, and Eccles’ own original post office, into apartments.

The last main use of the building was for the Polish Hell Social Club, which closed in 2015.

Before this the premises was repeatedly closed for extended periods.

The venue has had many names, none of them particularly successful, including the Baltic Patriot, Club Zar and Campos, before the Polish Hell Social Club opened in 2014.

Now plans are in for a change of use to to turn the Church Street venue into four two-bed flats.

Chris White, of local estate agents and building owners Barlow White, told SalfordOnline.com that the flats above the club space were already being rented out but that no-one had succesfully made a go of the downstairs venue space.

“Being right next to Eccles train station, 200 yards from the Metrolink, next to the M602 this is the perfect location for flats,” he said.

The building itself, next door to the Smith’s and Pacifica Cantonese restaurants, was originally built by retailer John Pearson in 1877.

A hard-carved stone marks this date on the front wall.

Pearson’s sold wines and spirits wholesale from this store and there is a blue plaque to the left of the front entrance denoting the historic element of this Victorian building.

At number 11 Church Street is the original Eccles post office, which closed in the 1930s.

Both buildings appear on Salford City Council’s list of local heritage assets.

Few, changes to the exterior – other than new windows – are proposed.

Planning documents state: “It is deemed that the conversion of the public house will provide a sustainable use for the site; the public house is currently not in use and has experienced long periods of closure in the past.

“The site will provide additional properties to a predominantly residential and popular area of Eccles to live in and provides additional properties to Salford’s housing needs.”

Salford City Council are expected to decide on the plans by 18 July 2016.
