Bakes, barks and a skunk called Lavender – Monton Festival plans are underway!

Plans for Monton’s new community festival have something for everyone.

In addition to stalls, games and family entertainment there’s a chance for both adult bakers and children under 12 to show off their cookery skills in the new Winner Bakes it All competition.

And, a new Pet Zone will feature a dog show, tarantulas and the chance to meet a pet skunk called Lavender.

Liz Harris, chair of Monton Village Community Association (MVCA) which organises the festival, said the new location at Duke’s Drive has allowed the festival committee to bring in new ideas.

“We now have the space to run a baking competition so we’re hoping to see and taste a great range of cakes, cookies, scones, brownies, pastries and pies. Vintage Ambience, our village team room has kindly donated afternoon tea for two with Prosecco for our adult star baker. The best children’s entry will also win a prize,” said Liz.

“We’re also having a dog show with categories including cutest pup, best trick and the dog the judges would most like to take home – though we will be keeping the pooches well away from the cakes, of course! People can enter on the day and the winners of each section will receive tickets to the Family Pet Show. ”

Safari Phil will bring along his critter crew with tarantulas, hissing cockroaches and a skunk called Lavender while local vets Buchanan Group will also be on hand – or paw – to answer any queries about pet health.

Places in both Winner Bakes All and the dog show are limited so please register your interest at www.montonvillage.org.uk and click on the festival logo.

Dog show entries can be made on the day – and both competitions cost £1 per cake or dog. All proceeds go to Monton Village Community Association to be spent on improvements to the village and/or events.

The Festival also has live entertainment with eight acts performing through the day including Whirling Dervish belly dancers, Monton Community Choir and Manchester Inspirational Voices.
