Smoke alarm warning after lucky escape in Swinton dishwasher fire

A household in Swinton were lucky to escape without harm after a kitchen fire broke out in the early hours of the morning.

But smoke alarms installed didn’t detect the fire.

They were only saved when a man who lived at the house smelled smoke before he fell asleep and went to check on the situation.

Crews from Agecroft and Eccles were scrambled to Vendale Avenue just after midnight on Tuesday morning, 21 June.

It’s thought the blaze broke out in a faulty dishwasher, which was well alight by the time crews arrived.

Hundreds of thousands of the appliances have been recalled since July 2011 for overheating while in use, a fault which could lead to a fire.

You can register your appliance and check if it is on the recall list here.”

Now firefighters are urging residents to make sure their smoke alarms are installed correctly.

Watch Manager Kris Meredith, said: “The people who lived in this house were incredibly lucky, their smoke alarms were installed on a wall and didn’t detect the smoke.

“Thankfully a man who lived in the house smelt the smoke before he fell asleep and if he hadn’t this incident would have had a very different outcome.

“Smoke alarms should be installed on the ceiling on every level of your home – if you need help installing them please get in touch with us and we’ll help you fit them.”

Chair of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority, Councillor David Acton, added: “Appliances like dishwashers, tumble dryers and washing machines sometimes cause fires.

“You can limit the risk by keeping them properly maintained and always adhering to the manufacturer’s instructions.

“Recently some appliances have been recalled by manufacturers.”
