Five new blocks at Salford Central: Giant 320ft tower among plans for 840 flats

A block of flats up to 33 storeys high could tower 325ft over central Salford as the English Cities Fund (ECf) reveals plans for over 800 new homes in the area.

New designs unveiled today show giant monoliths dominating the Salford skyline where it meets Manchester city centre.

The ECf are working on the Salford Central masterplan, which has turned brownfield and derelict sites into offices and residential plots.

Two towers of 90 and 135 flats have already passed planning, and they’ve completed the 125,000sq ft One New Bailey office block, the 143-bed Premier Inn on Irwell Street and the 637-space NCP car park on New Bailey Street.

Location

Plans were announced this week for an even bigger 190,000sq ft office block called, imaginatively enough, Two New Bailey.

But the second phase of works concerns a site on the banks of the River Irwell, between the river and Trinity Way.

The five new buildings range from 11 to 33 storeys high and make up a maximum 843 flats.

The very tallest will sit at the corner of Trinity Way and Irwell Street and comprises 236 flats.

There’s also the Riverside Pocket Park, turning a vacant scrubland on the riverbank near the new Ordsall Chord bridge and switching it over to new public realm space.

The plans aren’t advanced enough yet to be talking about developer’s contributions or Section 106 money but SalfordOnline.com will be keeping a close eye on proceedings.
