Schoolboy, 12, hurt after being hit by car on way to Walkden High School

A young boy suffered injuries after being hit by a car as he walked to school in Walkden.

The accident happened on Birch Road, near the junction with Lime Grove, shortly after 8am this morning, Wednesday 29 June.

A rapid response vehicle and road ambulance arrived on scene nine minutes later, a spokesperson for the North West Ambulance Service said.

The boy had serious bleeding and was being treated for spinal injuries and head injuries.

Four Walkden High School Year 9 boys and girls who were walking alongside the boy bravely called ambulance crews to the scene.

It’s understood the schoolboy was heading to a taster day at the school when the accident happened.

He was carefully treated by paramedics before being taken to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital for further assessment.

The driver of a black Vauxhall Astra stopped after the accident and no arrests have been made, Greater Manchester Police said.

Councillor Iain Lindley, who represents Walkden at Salford City Council, said he was “deeply shocked” to hear about the accident.

He added: “From myself and everyone in the local community we hope the boy makes a full and speedy recovery.”
