Former De La Salle building site hit again by fire in Weaste

Fire crews spent half an hour putting out a fire at a housebuilding site in Weaste last night.

At 11.08pm on Sunday 28 June two fire engines from Eccles and one from Agecroft station were called to a fire near Hebden Avenue.

Firefighters found a quantity of wood ablaze in houses under construction.

Crews spent around 30 minutes at the scene to put out the fire and make the area safe.

No-one was hurt.

In November 2014 the derelict former De La Salle college was hit by suspected arson attacks twice in a week.

Building contractors Taylor Wimpey were forced to resecure the site after frequent reports of trespassers.

The former grammar school closed at the end of the 2012 academic year.

In the time since it closed the college has fallen into a poor state of disrepair with its windows smashed and regular arson attempts.

Local residents complained of months of suspect fires, vermin, rubbish dumping and squatters using the building.

The college is being knocked down by Lymm firm ADM Regeneration Ltd, with 54 two, three and four-bedroom homes taking its place.

Salford City Council granted the De La Salle Trust outline planning permission for the development in October 2013, but modified plans were submitted with a finish date of late January 2016 now expected.
