Plan ahead for temporary road changes along Eccles Metrolink line

Drivers travelling through the Ordsall, Langworthy and Weaste areas of Salford are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys due to upcoming roadworks along the Metrolink Eccles via MediaCityUK line.

On behalf of Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), Metrolink operator and maintainer MRDL is currently replacing older sections of worn track along the 16 year-old Eccles line over the summer, and temporary traffic management measures will be in place.

Information about the works and traffic management measures, including site and diversion route maps of the area, can be found at www.transformationinformation.co.uk/summer-changes.

Work is being carried out in phases to lessen the impact on road users. The next phase of work will see changes from Sunday 10 July:

Weaste Metrolink stop: temporary traffic lights at the junction of Eccles New Road, Foster Street and Mode Wheel Road for approximately 11 days, with right and left turn restrictions at times.

From Monday 11 July work will start at:

Ordsall Lane: road closure between Trafford Road and Craven Drive for approximately 11 days.

South Langworthy Road: work near Dallas Court and Dakota Avenue will be carried out in four phases over approximately 26 days. Traffic management will include one-way systems during the first two phases of work and temporary traffic lights for later phases.

All vehicles, including HGVs, should follow signposted diversion routes when in place to avoid impacting residential streets.

Pedestrian access and access to businesses will be maintained at all times.

Peter Cushing, TfGM’s Metrolink Director, said: “These essential upgrades to the Metrolink track will ensure the continued safe and reliable running of tram services for years to come, but will mean temporary changes for local drivers for the next few weeks.

“We’ve worked closely with our contractor, Salford City Council and Urban Vision to carefully phase the work and lessen the impact as much as possible and, while people will still be able to make their journeys, there could be some delays.

“Anyone driving in the area should allow extra time to travel. We apologise for any inconvenience over the coming weeks.”

Urban Vision will also be resurfacing some highways in the area while the Metrolink rail maintenance project is ongoing.

The Eccles Metrolink line upgrade works have been timed to coincide with final works at St Peter’s Square stop, when fewer people are travelling due to the summer holiday period.

A combination of Metrolink and replacement bus services are running until the end of August, when full Metrolink services will resume, with services due to resume to MediaCityUK in early August.

Anyone who has queries about the work can contact the TfGM customer relations team on customer.relations@tfgm.com or 0161 244 1000.
