Up to 11 fire appliances were dispatched to the scene as the scale of the fire became clear.

Greater Manchester Fire’s aerial platform was also called to the scene.

Fire crews are thought to be in the process of pumping water from the River Irwell to tackle the fire from a safe distance.

One SalfordOnline.com reader at the scene at 10pm on Sunday said: “The whole building is well alight.

“It’s not just the roof that’s on fire, it’s the joists as well.

“Both floors are completely covered in smoke. I can’t see the fire service leaving here tonight.”

A full road closure is in place on Cromwell Road with a heavy police presence.

The top floor of Castle Irwell was completely engulfed in smoke and flames.

The now-derelict building closed in June 2015 as Salford University student accommodation.

The land, and the playing fields adjoining the former halls are still owned by the university.

No-one is thought to have been injured in the fire.
