Update: Police have now re-opened Cromwell Road after last night’s huge fire at former student halls Castle Irwell.
This morning, drivers were being diverted onto Lower Broughton Road from Great Cheetham Street West, as firefighters still tackled the remainder of the large blaze from yesterday evening.

Fire crews were called to the scene on Cromwell Road at around 8.30pm last night after large plumes of smoke were seen drifting into the sky, emanating from the campus’s former student union and bar.
Such was the scale of the fire, eyewitnesses say some of the smoke was visible up to a mile away.
