Man pleads guilty to brutal murder of Salford student William Lound

A 37-year-old man has pleaded guilty to stabbing a Salford University student to death at his student halls in February this year.

Promising 30-year-old IT student William Lound was found dead in his room at the Bramall Court tower block on Cannon Street in Salford on Monday 8 February.

He had been stabbed multiple times in the neck and back in a vicious attack.

Lee Arnold, 37, was arrested and charged with his murder after approaching a Police Community Support Officer on patrol in Manchester city centre and confessing he had killed a man.

He was remanded in custody at the Ashworth psychiatric unit in Merseyside.

William, described by family as a ‘kind, generous and unique young man’, had won a scholarship to study Computer Science at the University of Salford University.

Originally from Southport, he had been staying in the Salford student halls for the first year of his degree.

Salford University’s Vice Chancellor Professor Helen Marshall offered these words of condolence in the wake of his killing: “This has come as a huge shock to us all, and our thoughts are with family and friends of the victim at this difficult time.”

Officers cordoned off the entire floor of the Salford University halls at Bramall Court tower block after discovering the body.

Appearing before His Honour Judge Potter today, Monday 11 July, at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester, Lee Arnold pleaded guilty to murder.

He appeared via video link from Ashworth.

He is expected to be sentenced later this week.
