Music and arts #popuphere coming to New Bailey in Salford

Comedy, sports and arts lovers in Salford are in for a treat this summer as pop-up activities roll into town at New Bailey.

Upcoming events in the newly-built public areas around Salford Central Station include live music, interactive street performance and sports and games.

Running from July 16 to August 31, all events are free throughout the summer to those who attend.

It starts with Streetwise Soccer bringing their one-vs-one cage and inflatable target to the open space off New Bailey Street.

From 11am to 5pm would-be Ronaldos can show off their silky skills.

Also planned are a pop-up piano, and open space at the platform for local dance troupes or would-be comedians to perform lunchtime comedy.

The mantra is DIY.

And audiences are being urged to post a picture on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #popuphere.

The area – formerly vacant land over the River Irwell from Spinningfields – is being transformed with new housing, restaurants, office space, leisure and neighbourhood areas.

At Christmas 2015 it was home to the popular Manchester Ice Rink which saw thousands descend on the former law offices to get into the festive spririt.

Libby Witherden, who leads on New Bailey’s events programme, said: “Part-programmed, part organic, we’re hoping the community will adopt this space and make it their own.

“Programmed events will be advertised on our website but there will be some spontaneous stuff to look out for too!”
