This weekend’s first Scarecrow Festival set to be runaway success

The first ever Scarecrow Festival, organised by the community group Mosley Common in Bloom, will take place this weekend and with 25 home-made creations it looks set to be a huge hit.

Each handmade scarecrow gets pride of place in gardens throughout Mosley Common and the public can follow the trail of straw men and pick their favourite.

The best scarecrow creators will win prizes at a community festival taking place on Saturday 30 July throughout the day.

Lindale Hall, off Chaddock Lane, opens for bacon sandwiches and hot drinks at 10am, where you can collect a judge’s score sheet for £1 (includes a hot drink on your return — one per entry only).

The scarecrow with highest score wins cash prizes for its creator.

If there are multiple winners with the same score, names will be drawn out of a hat for first, then second and third.

Anyone can buy a judging form and join the mile-long trail along Mosley Common, with the option of either driving or walking, weather permitting.

There will be fun activities for children and adults throughout the day at Lindale Hall where you will also be able to enjoy food and refreshments from 10am until 4pm.

Maxine Abberly, Chair of Mosley Common in Bloom, said: “We thought that we were taking a bit of a gamble since there has not been anything like this in the area before and had our fingers crossed hoping that there would be some entries.

“We were overwhelmed by the number of entries, and the enthusiasm of the community for this event which we will now be adding to our list of annual events.

Some of the amazing entries include a scarecrow dog and a couple of Worzel Gummidge lookalikes.

“The quality of the entries is amazing” said Maxine, “especially when you consider that this is the first time many of the competitors have tried their hand at anything like this.

“I think that every one should be a winner, but it will be up to the public to carry out the difficult task of judging on Saturday.”
