Update: Meadowbrook patient refusing to come down from roof of Salford mental health unit

Police and fire crews are helping staff at a mental health unit to negotiate with a male patient who climbed on the building’s roof and refused to come down.

At 1.30pm on Monday 1 August, Greater Manchester Fire sent two engines from Bolton and an aerial appliance to reports that a person may have been on the roof of the 68-bed Meadowbrook inpatient facility.

The man is not thought to have been injured in any way through the course of the stand-off.

As of 5pm on Monday the incident was still ongoing.

Readers started reporting a large emergency services presence on Stott Lane, including seeing the 100ft hydraulic platform towering over the mental health unit in Salford.

Over three hours later staff were still trying to bring the man safely down from the roof.

Reports from the scene suggest the man, who is a current patient at Meadowbrook, has so far refused.

While part of the larger Salford Royal hospital campus, Meadowbrook’s 68-bed unit is run and managed by Greater Manchester West NHS Foundation Trust (GMW).

GMW bosses confirmed to SalfordOnline.com that there was an “ongoing incident” and that a patient being treated at the unit had made their way onto the roof.

Police blocked off traffic from turning right into the Meadowbrook entrance from Stott Lane.

Gill Green, Director of Nursing and Operations at Greater Manchester West Mental Health NHS Foundation said: “We can confirm there is an ongoing incident involving a mental health patient on the roof of our Meadowbrook inpatient unit in Salford.

“Mental health staff and emergency services are in attendance and we are doing all we can to ensure the safety of this individual.”
