Salford Royal chief drafted in to help failing Pennine Trust

Salford Royal hospital chief executive David Dalton has been appointed to turn around one of the largest hospital trusts in England after it was rated ‘inadequate’ by health bosses.

Watchdog the Care Quality Commission found “serious concerns” over the running of Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

Pennine runs four hospitals: North Manchester General, Oldham Royal, Fairfield and Rochdale Infirmary.

Inspectors found there were grave issues over patient safety and said risks were inadequately managed, while staffing levels were unacceptably low with high turnover.

The trust only escaped being put into special measures because Dalton and a new leadership team have been appointed to turn the trust around.

Salford’s leadership team was marked ‘outstanding’ by the CQC in 2015.

David Dalton, who joined Salford Royal in 2001, was knighted for his services to the NHS in 2014.
