At 5.45pm on Tuesday 16 August police, fire and ambulance crews were dispatched to Eccles Old Road, near the junction with the A6 Broad Street.

A spokesperson from North West Ambulance Service confirmed they received a call about the crash at 5.48pm and arrived on scene three minutes later.

Fire engines from Agecroft, Manchester Central and a Technical Response Unit from Ashton helped to rescue the injured man by first stabilising the van, then using an electric saw to cut him free.

The 53-year-old suffered injuries to his back, with paramedics concerned about a potential spinal injury.

He was taken by ambulance to Salford Royal Hospital.

Greater Manchester Police said at the time that they believed no other vehicles were involved in the accident but eyewitnesses reported how a grey SEAT clipped the white van in the moments before the crash.

Images from the crash site show a grey five-door hatchback on the opposite side of the carriageway with its airbags deployed and damage to the driver’s nearside wing.
