Sign up to meet rugby league’s finest at Lance Todd Trophy Dinner in Salford

Salford Red Devils Foundation is to host the Lance Todd Dinner at the AJ Bell Stadium next week to award the game’s finest player.

Now you have the chance to join legends of the game at the formal dinner, which takes place on Wednesday 31 August.

The Lance Todd Trophy is handed out every year to the man of the match in the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup Final.

Places can be booked by emailing john.blackburn@reddevilsrugby.co.uk or by calling 0161 786 1591.

The trophy is awarded each year based on the votes of the Rugby League Writers association.

It’s named for Kiwi-born Lance Todd, who became Salford’s manager in 1928 and went on to attain legendary status.

Under his leadership Salford turned from a club on the brink of collapse into world-beaters, in the 1930s winning three League Championships, five Lancashire League Championships and four Lancashire Cups.

He was a hugely popular character who also coached Salford to their one and only Challenge Cup Final triumph in 1938.

Todd was tragically killed in a driving accident in the 1942 blackout while serving in the Salford section of the Home Guard.

In his honour, the Salford RLFC Past Players Association commissioned a trophy to be awarded at the Challenge Cup Final each year.

The award has a prestigious history, with legends of the game such as Jason Robinson, Andy Gregory and Ellery Hanley winning the trophy through the years.

2015 Lance Todd Trophy winner Tom Briscoe has been confirmed as one of the guests and interviewees at the upcoming Lance Todd Dinner at the AJ Bell Stadium.

Briscoe was awarded the trophy following his stunning performance at Wembley in which he scored five tries as Leeds beat Hull KR 50-0.

The dinner, which is sponsored by Red Devils Foundation partners Betfred, will be attended by a number of previous winners, as the stars of rugby league meet to honour the achievements of this year’s winner.

It’s traditionally held on the Wednesday after the Challenge Cup Final, and in 2016 one lucky player from finalists Warrington or Hull will claim the coveted prize.

Foundation Commercial Director John Blackburn has been instrumental in establishing the Lance Todd Dinner as one of the most anticipated social events of the rugby league calendar.

He said: “The Lance Todd Dinner is always a fantastic event.

“It’s brilliant that we’re able to honour the legends of our game in such a way.

“With so many former players in the room the conversation is always good.

“Having Tom at the dinner is fantastic, scoring five tries in a Challenge Cup final is an incredible achievement, and it will be interesting to hear from the man himself at an event which is always a brilliant evening.”

All proceeds from the event go to Salford Red Devils Foundation and Salford RLFC Past Players Association.

The event takes place on Wednesday 31 August, and places can be booked by email john.blackburn@reddevilsrugby.co.uk or by calling 0161 786 1591.
